Life is complicated, but you already knew that. Even in one 24-hour period, we can experience elation and then anxiety, the most beautiful moment shared with a loved one, and a deep hurt by someone we care about.
Social media, the latest self-help experts, and even misguided Christians can lead us to believe that life is sort of straightforward; do the right things, put in the work, say your prayers, and life should work out, right? Except, not always.
Is there a place to explore the messiness of life in a way that is more than cynical and complaining? Is there a place to wrestle with the complexities and apparent inconsistencies in our life experience while not losing our faith in God? Is there a place to do this in church?
Why, yes! Ecclesiastes may be an ancient book of wisdom, but it speaks to our cultural moment as if it were written today. And it is in the Bible, which means it’s fair game for exploring at church.
So, let’s bring our existential angst, our doubts, and questions, and see if Ecclesiastes can help us make sense of the mess we call life.
